Bits and pieces of school work
The times are crying for integrated men and women. Society wants integrated people to save it from disintegration; if you are at least to a great degree free of prejudice, hate, revenge, fears and whims, you can assist.

Teaching idea #136
All resentment, anger, and aggression come from the conditioned belief that we have RIGHTS. Our solution to resentment, anger, and aggression is to realize that we have NO RIGHTS. I DO have PRIVILEGES and I am free to enhance, to maintain and to increase my privileges.

Teaching a man to be good to gain and escape future rewards and punishments places grievous burdens on him. Guilt, bigotry, hate, fear, and anxiety are brought into being and maintained.

Teaching idea #71
The only thing that can be integrated is purpose and will. Then there is real I. Real I is not controlled by shoulds, oughts, have tos and musts. When purpose and will are integrated there is a real I.

Teaching idea #1-7
Misery is when I'm trying to avoid discomfort.
I am a spiritual being having a human experience.
We live in that which we radiate.
Human service is the way to divinity.
Prime misconception; that we can live on planet earth without being disturbed.
When my needs are great enough, and my wants are small enough, all difficulties are removed.
I refuse to react to other people's reatcion.

The four dual basic urges
Level | Gain | Escape |
Physical | Comfort and Pleasure | Pain and Discomfort |
Mental | Attention | Being Ignored or Rejected |
Emotional | Approval | Disapproval |
Transcendental | Being needed; Feeling Important; Appearance of being important | Inferiority: Insignificance |
Reno 92 part 3
Now the child is taken to the church and the policeman and various and sundry 'authorities'. And it says you got to do what they tell you in order to be safe. Correct? You gotta do what they tell you. So, that comes up number 4. It says believe and do as you are told by your authorities. and if we look around we find that's a little touchy. It don't work that way. Now the four dual basic urges has been growin because we look at things that are comfortable to us and we call that attention. Cryin' will get you attention when you are a kid. And ignored is the painful thing. And we wanted to get approval, people tell us how wonderful we were and escape all dissaproval. And we wanted to gain importance and escape inferiority. Inferiority is quite a pain isn't it? So, all these we made very important. Now let's remember that we made them important. We made everything on this board is made important. It's important to complain to get my way, it's important to stick up for my rights, it's important to please them, and it's important to believe and do as I'm told by my authorities. And it's important to have all these. So, there's still a couple more of these up here so number the five is it's important to improve. Improve myself. Now, I don't how you would improve myself because you have conflict and you wanting to get rid of it. So you think to improve yourself and you'll get alright. You improve by believing and doing as told by your authorities, trying to do as your parents and everything they wanted. That don't work very well does it? It goes against your inner state. So, that one is another pain. But you still workin' to improve yourself aren't you? Maybe that's why you came here today was to improve yourself. I'm not gonna suggest that at all. You stay as you are or worse, and that'll be alright. But let's not go for improvement, alright? And then when we were about 7 or 8 years old we find out what it's all about. If he she they it etc, were all different, I'd be fine.

Reno 92 part 2
We're in the uterine world and enjoying it pretty well. You didn't have a thing to do, you didn't get hungry because you was fed through a little tube in your tummy, you didn't get short of breath because that was fed through the same way. You didn't get tired, you didn't get sleepy, if you did you slept, and that was all there was to it. So, life went on fairly well. We'll call that the four dual basic urges. We'll call it that because we'll get to it in a few minutes. The four dual basic urges. It says the purpose of living is to gain and escape pleasure and comfort, and escape pain. Now a child in it's being born experiences pain and discomfort, and the first thing it does is cry. Is that right Kristin? It cries. So it says things aren't going so well, and that cry is an unpleasant sound to us and so we generally hop to and go and see to get it comfortable if at all possible. Well that works pretty good, but now then you can cry and nobody pays much attention to you, is that right? (audience says 'I hate that') I know but that's what's there. Now the first method that the child tried to get to get over this pain was to complain. Now the complainin' worked pretty good for about two years, but after that it don't work so hot. You still complain about everyday is that right? Mechanically feel uncomfortable you complain. Instead of seeing what's going on you complain. So we however many years old that's how long we've been using it. Since the day of birth until today we've been complaining. Okay? So that works along for awhile until the child makes another conclusion is to how to get it, it sticks up for it's rights. What it assumes is it's rights anyways because really we don't have any rights. We were born helpless, naked, totally without anything and we were found a couple of slaves that kind of took care of us. But we assumed we have a right to that. So we stick up for rights, that's when we get a little ticked. Do you ever get a little ticked because you don't get your rights? Doesn't do any good but we do it, is that correct? (that's correct) So now this is all still one sided here but we are trained by our parents that we've got to please them. When your about two years old, up until then we get along with this complainin' and stickin' up for our rights doin real well with it. But after awhile we find it doesn't work and our parents said you big enough now you can please me for awhile. So they use various and sundry methods to convince a child to please them. So the child makes another decision that says it's important to please them. "Cause they'll fuss at me if I don't. Now that brings conflict. This is the first time they have real conflict. That brings conflict between stickin up for your rights and complainin' or doing what your parents want to do to please them. So now then there has to be a conflict or a question everytime you start to do something there is a little conflict that goes on. Shall I please them or shall I stick up for my rights? These days usually I think the kid keeps stickin' up for his rights and complainin' Used to they pushed it the other way around. Is that right John? Now then we don't push it so hard.

Reno 92 excerpt part one
First we'll talk about a human being. First we'll talk about how you were put together to start with, and what happened to you, okay? So we'll first make one, we'll draw us a picture of man, I'm not an artist so I'll make it a diagram. So first off everybody has a physical body we can see that so we know about that one. Everybody has an awareness function, we can see that also. 'Cause we can tell people respond to us and get out of the way and do various and sundry things we know they're aware. And then there is something can probably be just as elegant we'll call it "X" cause we don't know what it is but we do know that it exists. And X is what takes care of doing things, it keeps us alive. Did you know that? It keeps you alive. Something keeps us going until something happens that X can't handle and then we depart this world. So X is a very essential thing and we want understand how it works. So, we exist in an environment all the way around us, and we receive impressions from the environment. That goes to awareness, we're aware of it. Awareness says what it is and it goes to X. And it doesn't matter whether that impression is absolutely accurate or not or whether it is inaccurate, X operates on it for the information it receives. Remember that one. It works on the information received. And X then sends impulse to the physical body, and we have a function. Now the function may be accurate, it may not be, according on whether the impression was properly assumed. So, we'll say in this one here there is no conditioning and the person sees things as they are in the environment, okay? And then the function would be perfect for the impression received from the environment whatever was going on out there Now, that works day in and day out without our thought of it or anything else, it just goes on, and everything would work pretty well if we were in this state. If the awareness was just an awareness function. But starting very early in childhood, we began to be conditioned with various and sundry ideas. And the first bit of conditioned came from within. So we'll just put a little thing down here that represents the first decision. It was probably made in the first few hours of life if not almost immediately. And it said that the purpose of living is to regain the non disturbed state.

To look at something without associating it with something already known, is to see that "something" as new and fresh: thus allowing creative being.
A creative being is seeing what "I am" - what "I" refers to is in a state of self-knowing.
To be fresh every moment; to be responding to the something without conditioning is one aspect of being reborn.
Conditioning is responding to this as though it were that; now as though it were then.
When one is awake for a moment, mechanical associating comes to an end. This can be called spiritual living...every moment is the response of spirit to the moment, instead of the reaction of conditioning to something similar in the dead past.

It seems that many people ask the questions, "Where did I come from?" or "Where am I going." Few ask the vital question, "Where am I?"
By asking the question, "Where am I?" we may see that man is a privileged, invited guest in a beautiful estate called the earth and that life is the host. Seeing this would enable us to see that everything one does is for the host. We might also see that the host has always provided food, clothing and shelter through one channel or another ever since we have been at the party. The host apparently finds all his invited guests interesting, because he did not ask anyone's approval of the guest list. Further, we brought nothing with us to the party and those who leave do not take anything with them. Finally, we may discover that a lot of games are being played and theses games can be played consciously.
Would it be interesting to discover what would happen if one chose the role of being a conscious guest at the big party?

What does it mean not to be hypnotized by events - by the world?
Before one can be hypnotized by the world, one must have an ideal based on a false value; a value that is established by "I" because it wants to be nondisturbed. In other words, it puts value on the gratification of all senses at all times.
The inner hypnotic voices of the senses - by making continual suggestions - firmly implant the idea that one's sole purpose of living is to be nondisturbed. When one's purpose is disturbed by any form of resistance, the inner voices say one should complain, stick up for one's rights, and blame others. One also continually hears hypnotic voices from beings who are themselves hypnotized. These outer voices firmly implant the idea that one should please them, believe and do as they say, be different, since this is the only way to be nondisturbed. Theses are conflicting ways, and when a person tries to use either way to reach the ideal state, he is in conflict. He really is in a prison - a prison of conflict.

Is an "Ideal" a god one serves and sacrifices life's energy for?
Does one try to convert others so they will accept one's ideals and serve them?
Are ideals false gods?
Is one very apt to be a promoter of false gods unknowingly?
Does it seem likely that a very useful study would be that of analyzing ideals?
Are not ideals false gods?
There are four forces involved in any completed phenomenon.
Initiative
Resistance (passive or active)
Form
Completion or Result
The first force, initiative, is from the self. The second force, resistance, is from without. The third force, form, is from the interaction of the first and second forces. The fourth force, result, is derived from the interaction of first, second, and third forces.
Thr crucial point to understand is second force.
Without an understanding of second force, every expectation will be based on an ideal. When one has such an expectation, he will eventually experience disappointment. This disappointment subsequently produces a feeling of hurt and one looks for the cause of his hurt. All this results in one experiencing the emotions of guilt, fear, anger, and insecurity. Man was not designed to handle emotions and the stress which results from having them lead to disintegration.
Anger, guilt, fear, and insecurity give birth to self-pity, resentment, jealousy, greed, and hate...thus to every form of violence.
When a person is awake to second force, then that person does not have expectations which are based on an ideal. He sees that the aims, purposes, and plans he initiates will in some way be interfered with or altered by circumstances that arise.
This awakened state is called being a new man, a man with knowledge, a man who sees second force as a helpful challenge to inner and outer development or completion of Self. This new man expects second force to manifest itself in all our affairs. A new man is free to experience second force and continues toward his aim or purpose, making a worthwhile discovery on the way.

Attention
It has been observed for some time that one of the valuable keys to a higher level of being is awareness of directing attention.
Attention is attracted by a multitude of stimuli; some noise attracts attention, and some not I says "This is totally unnecessary," and the emotion of anger arises; a few minutes later a musical melody attracts the attention and the person starts tapping in time to the music; then on the radio a news item attracts the attention by stating that AIDS is epidemic and fear arises. This goes on all day. Never once was the attention consciously devoted to any purpose or idea long enough to actualize anything.
It has been said that one becomes what one pays continuous attention to. Do you suppose that when doesn't pay attention to anything that one becomes nothing?
Let us visualize for a little while the activity of paying attention to thinking and acting, health, well-being, enthusiasm, thankfulness, sincere interest in others, outgoing friendliness, paying attention to the need of many about us for attention, approval, and appreciation. It takes very little attention to see a need and supply that need. This little exercise of visualization will show possibilities of service few have noticed.
Now is the time to focus attention and act upon the little outline above. In a very short time one will experience a higher state of being, expressed in many ways.
The attention is to be focused outward at all times. Any in-turning of the attention results in an ever lower state of being. The person with total attention on self is what is referred to as psychotic; on the other end of the scale is a person whose attention is totally turned outward. This person is called anything from a mystic to a super successful person, depending on what outside area the attention is focused on.
This is an experimental area that is of great value to pursue. May you experience the joy of it.

Some people are called successful by the fact of what they have learned to know; some by the fact of what they can do; and some few by what they are.
Freedom & responsibility: the two sides of the same idea that results in a driving force and inner peace at the same time.
The greatest treasure a person can find is wisdom and understanding. Don't look for wisdom under a rock or at the bottom of the sea. Look to see what really motivates yourself and others.
Only the power of inner strength allows a person to be gentle.

RIGHTS AND PRIVILEGES from the picture of man for 12 steppers
You and I and everyone else were born naked, helpless, unable to speak the language, and broke. Were we born with rights? Not really. We had one or usually two or more slaves to look after us.Were we born with privileges? Most definitely.
Do we have a right to life? It can be easily taken away. Is it not rather a privilege? What people think of as rights, but which can be taken away- food, shelter, clothing, transportation, power, wealth, affection, life itself-all are privileges. What can be taken away was given, therefore a gift. The world today makes much ado about human rights, as you well know. But make a list of them. Any that can be taken away cannot, therefore be rights, but are privileges.
The Science of Man teaching about rights and privileges is a whole new way of looking at life for most people. Do not believe the teaching, but check it out for yourself. Experiment, try to prove it wrong. Pay attention to what's going on here and then determine what are your rights and what are your privileges.

(audience member asks what a "not-I" is)
Well ah there's thoughts that goes on in your head and ideas that pop in there and that is not you. They're from theses things here which are merely ghosts of ideas rising up again 'cause you didn't have any evaluation okay? So, if I said to you today, "Your hair is snow white" you would go look and evaluate and say well that's a big lie, and go on about your business. But if you were told that when you were a child, that it's important to have my way now, and it's important to complain to get my way, it's important to please them, it's important to believe and do as I am told by my authorities, they'd be in there working and they come up at the least touch and say so now. And people take those as some sort of inward meaning that they have to do it. But it's just a not-I talking. So we call it not-I because it's not you it's only ah, an old thing that's sittin' there that activates a belief (last word of sentence inaudible). Does that help a little bit? (audience: yeah) Okay.

Only the strong can afford to be gentle and kind.
The strong never feel frustrated. They recognize challenge and know they are capable of meeting the challenge intelligently without violence.
Those who are strong are not infants with grown-up bodies having some technical education.
A machine is at the mercy of what happens to it.
Most people are mechanical in that their state is at the mercy of what happens to them.
There are a few people who determine their state of being regardless of what is happening to them.

Gibson notes prior to 1971
Any emotional (sentimental) involvement in an interpersonal relationship is a disintegrative situation.
Impersonal: objective.
Impersonal: non-sentimental, objective. "I don't know what ought to be, therefore I am not entitled, I have no rights and am free to use my head."
Interpersonal: sentimental, subjective - "I know what ought to be, therefore I am entitled and I have rights, I must change things, including you, into what ought to be."
When I know how other people ought to be (or do), I am incapable of an objective impersonal relationship.
Respecter of persons - being involved with, identified with, "What will people think?" Etc. would result in an unreliable individual incapable of having an impersonal relationship.
A respecter of persons has to be sentimental. A non-respecter of persons can live without conflict, struggle, and resistance, without sentimentality.
Sentimentality is a form of control over human beings.
In an impersonal relationship, we see each person as they are without needing to change anyone.
Can we live an impersonal life? We must. An interpersonal life brings about death. The only time we make something important, we feel we know what ought to be, and are therefore entitled to have it the way we want it (have our own way, by right).
We are free to work to change what doesn't appeal to our taste. We may experiment and cultivate our own abilities. We are incapable of changing other people but we can experiment. We are not entitled to change people to meet our standards.

Letters from Rhondell
According to history available, mankind used to seek his food and clothing by hunting and gathering. He took what he could find. If there was an abundance of edible plants and animals, they got along fairly well. If, due to adverse weather situations the plants and animals were scarce, they suffered.
Gradually various ones (probably the lazy ones) had an insight to be cultivators instead of just gatherers. They even thought up irrigation. This allowed more free time and a more constant supply of food. This in turn made possible the domestication of animals. One cannot domesticate an animal without feeding it.
Only in recent times has mankind begun to think in terms of cultivating desirable states of health or well being instead of treating illness. Illness is seen as an attack on the person from an unseen force.
Since a few have begun to see illness as a normal adaptation to a stressful lifestyle, it has been found that one can cultivate a desirable state of health or well being.
One's state of well being is balanced to one's environment, inner feeling, activity, and nutrition.
To have a lower amount of stress in one's everyday living usually requires at least some change in one's lifestyle. For instance, it requires an aim and practice to have a desirable inner feeling at all times. Much of each newsletter is devoted to this idea. At least some self discipline is required to have a somewhat optimum activity - some balance between work, play, and rest. Considerable self discipline is required to have a more or less optimum state of nutrition.
None of this lifestyle change is difficult, except deciding to do so. One only uses common sense, not faddism.

Addiction Part two
To understand addiction it is necessary to have working knowledge of adaptation in the human. Adaptation is the real survival. If for instance, one takes into the body a noxious substance on a continuing basis, the first attempt of the living organism is to eliminate the substance by vomiting, extra excretion, rapid oxidation. However, if the substance is taken repeatedly, the living organism adapts by creating an antidote, not only when the substance is taken in, but when the substance is expected.
Now the need for the substance is required by the body to restore balance to the antidote. This produces the craving and the compulsion to continue the substance. This is addiction.
The same process works for internal secretions, hormones produced in the body in response to emotional states, resulting in a constant repetition of the behavior patterns regardless of circumstances from outside of the body.
All addiction lowers the well being of the person and the natural ability to just enjoy living. As stated before, the recognition that one is addicted is the start towards freedom. No doubt it is easier to be aware of addiction to substances from outside than it is to recognize that one is addicted to internally produced hormones, such as those produced when one is angry or worried, or anxious, or complaining, or disgusted, or finding fault, etc., etc.
However, conditioning has resulted in many of us seeing almost all situations as dangerous and the ability to imagine things has given the conditioned person many situations that only exist in thought, to be in an emergency feeling state. Further, it seems to be that most persons feel that they are entitled to have all wants gratified at once, or else feel that they are being mistreated and denied their natural right of being totally non-disturbed; this leads to all kinds of addictions.X

What's going on here page 5/6
Addiction, Part One
All those who spend their time working with people-problems sooner or later recognize that the whole human problem of misery is the problem of addiction.
Everyone is, of course, aware of addiction in cases of drug addiction, alcohol addiction, nicotine addiction. As serious as these addictions are, they are merely the top of the iceberg, so to speak. Most addictions aren't recognized by the person addicted, their friends nor family, nor society as a whole, nor by the people-serving professions.
First let their be consideration of what addiction is, how it may be recognized. Addiction is the human condition when something is craved and a justification is found to justify the craving. The person will go to great lengths to gratify it, and it must be repeated constantly. The person so addicted never seems to recognize that they are addicted; it's just something that is enjoyed, just human nature, etc., etc.
Addiction can be recognized by the objective observer by simply seeing that there is a constant pattern to the person's activity. It can easily be seen that the person is continually buying the gratification for their addiction with all their reserves, their health, peace of mind, and in the end with their life.
Now for some addictions not usually recognized as addictions but which fit all the criteria of addiction. Please note that all of these have the same signs of addiction as alcohol and drugs.
ATTENTION Just look about to see how many spend all their resources, their energy, their time; then neglect their family, their business and their health in their attempt to gratify the addiction to attention.
PLAYING THE BIG SHOT Same as above.
BEING A VICTIM Just look; no matter what's going on the person proves self to be a victim, repeating life situations wherein they are beaten, abused, mistreated, frustrated. When one has certain emotions, corresponding hormones are produced in the body, and one becomes addicted to the presence of the hormones and produces circumstances to produce these hormones--plainly addicted.
COMPLAINING Same as above. The person finds all sorts of things to complain about while saying,"I'm not complaining, BUT..."
FAULT FINDING Same as being a victim.
EATING DISORDERS Same as Attention. Addiction to dieting, fasting, eating. ("I'm a victim of food")
SELF-CONDEMNATION A variation of the Attention and Victim syndromes.
INFERIORITY FEELING Same as self-condemnation; a variation of Justification.
DISCRIMINATION SYNDROME A common variation of the Victim addiction. "I'm discriminated against because of sex, race, religion, occupation," etc. etc. Very common.
DISTRACTION Must have constant distraction, noise, music, sex as entertainment, taste for some substance. The start of most chemical addiction.
WORK Attention, Victim, and Complaining. "It all depends on me."
EXERCISE Combination of getting attention and addiction to the chemical changes in the body produced by intense activity.
BEING SICK Combination of Attention and Victim.
This could go on with enough material for a textbook but this is enough for the present.
Now what can be done about it?
Before the person addicted can do anything about the misery-producing situation, there must be recognition that one is addicted. This is the first step. Without recognition, nothing can be done. Once it is recognized by the person addicted, real work can be done very quickly. But without that recognition, nothing can be done. X

Bits and pieces from school work
Without a purpose of some sort, conscious or unconscious, one will do absoloutely nothing.
The most valuable asset one can have is a consciously chosen purpose, and the sense of duty to actualize it.
The way of success is "What can I contribute?" NOT "what can I get?"
Which do you spend more time on--"How am I being treated by others?" or "How am I treating others?"
Total inner consideration is called psychotic behavior.
NOW is the precious present that all to often is not valued.
Everyone wants longer life and more abundant living. However, few make the most of every moment. If one is out of present time 50% of the time, that one's life is cut by 50%.
Now has no beginning or ending, therefore is timeless.
One talent is as valuable to the world as another. A so-called small talent used to it's fullest is of GREAT worth.

The Nature of Scripts
A frequent question is asked is, "What is the meant by having a script?" A script is merely the essentials in acting out a consciously chosen role.
The first step is to see that one unconsciously is trying to achieve the Four Dual Basic Urges, because one feels entitled to them, and as one can never have the Four Dual Basic Urges realized more than a very short time now and then, so one feels victimized and thus unknowingly acts and feels the victim role.
To write a script one must choose a new purpose of living. A new purpose is a role. It is best to start with a simple role.; for instance, "My role is that of contributing to a pleasant, harmonious mood." First step in the script/role would be: Seeing that trying to be non-disturbed is futile and only leads to conflict, struggle and resistance, the disintrigrating factor.
Second step is to determine the action and attitude that contribute to pleasant, harmonious mood.
The third step is to start the actual practice of contributing to a pleasant, harmonious mood, whether with others or alone.
Fourth step is to avoid finding fault or feeling guilty when one falls into the old purpose of being non-disturbed, but simply pick up the new role at that point and proceed with practice. This practice can be activated at home, at work, on the telephone, in person--in fact, under any and all circumstances.
All other scripts follow the same outline. X

Where are Not-I's ?
Many people we talk with seem to feel that the only Not-I's they are ever in contact with are inside. As noisy as the inside ones are, those we are in contact with daily on the outside are just as noisy--and there are many more, as we hear them from everyone we meet.
The Not-I's in people we are in close contact with may try to influence one to feel guilty. Or to feel sorry for someone, to feel that the other is a victim. Some will attempt to make one feel resentful or angry. One very common effort of the Not-I's is causing one to feel obligated to be responsible for the happiness of another. Not recognizing these motivators for what they are --Not-I's busy at what they are talented to do, make people feel miserable--is to fall asleep.
To recognize them for what they are eliminates much misery, much misunderstanding with persons close to one. When one sees that most defensive feelings and behavior are incited by Not-I's not the real person one is associated with such feelings and behavior comes to an end, and are replaced with compassion and real caring as well as internal calm.
Seeing all complaining, inner and outer, all defensiveness, inner and outer, all authoritative manner, all putting down of self and others, inner and outer, all blaming, inner and outer, as the dirty work of the Not-I's ends practically all friction in relationships. Then and only then can relationships be the fulfilling situations that everyone is looking for. Note--please don't assume that only self is taken over frequently by the Not-I's. The rest of humanity has the same problem, that's why agape is needful. X

Teaching idea #90
When we remove the obstructions (guilt, fear, anger, insecurity, and their many synonyms) regeneration is spontaneous. We stop that which is destructive. We cannot afford these emotions.
Teaching idea #89
The "Not'-I's" make everything important, leading to conflict struggle and resistance, which results in chaos and disorder. Disorder is disease (physical, mental, economc, and emotional). LIFE is an orderly process. It hurts to be in a state of chaos. We can stop doing the things that cause conflict and struggle.

Teaching idea #88
When we know what we are, where we are, and what is going on and what we can do, we are love itself. We are then spontaneously harmless, considerate and make a contribution, without any conflict.
Teaching idea #87
The great love affair: Will and Purpose. They have been separated and both are miserable trying to get back united again. One feels fragmented and separated. We want to experience union. The union is when the conscious purpose is united with will. Nothing gives us any joy until will and purpose are in union. Our purpose is something we can do RIGHT NOW, not something in the future.
